Both options A and C are cash activities that would be reflected on a company’s cash flow statement. A company does not generate any cash inflows or cash outflows from non-cash investing and financing activities. However, these activities can still have a material effect on a company’s financial position. These non-cash items need to be properly recorded on the income statement, but disregarded for the cash flow statement. Cash can be spent, so it is the most liquid of the assets. Given that the transaction didn’t involve cash, it would have no effect on the cash flow statement. If we purchase a new dump truck, we don’t take the entire purchase price as an expense when we purchase it. In addition to activities that generate cash flows (operating, investing, and financing), companies also engage in investing and financing activities that do not generate any cash flows. These activities are therefore not reported on the cash flow statement.

Assume you are the chief financial officer of T-Shirt Pros, a small business that makes custom-printed T-shirts. While reviewing the financial statements that were prepared by company accountants, you discover an error. During this period, the company had purchased a warehouse building, in exchange for a $200,000 note payable. The company’s policy is to report noncash investing and financing activities in a separate statement, after the presentation of the statement of cash flows.
